Disney Inspired Fashion: Part Four

The fourth installment of Disney fashion takes inspiration from both live-action Disney films and classic animations. Whether you want to dress like Mary Poppins or Wendy Darling, you can find it all here! Forgot about Bedknobs and Broomsticks and The Great Mouse Detective? Well, now you can remember them daily by taking a page from their film fashion.

Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is a timeless classic and the fashion inspiration derived from it is just as timeless. Everyone could benefit from a basic wool coat that can be worn for years, and to complement the coat a floppy fedora. If you're a real Mary Poppins fan, you can even purchase an authentic replica hat. A pair of lace-up brown boots are both an homage to the past and a present trend. A vintage carpet bag is unique and can carry a plethora of goodies; maybe not a floor lamp, but it could be worth giving it a try! A Mary Poppins bracelet is a whimsical treat for an everyday outfit, and you can't forget that umbrella with the gorgeous bird handle! I suppose any black umbrella will do, but why settle for less when you can get the real thing? A diamond-shaped necklace will make you want to go fly a kite. And if you're planning on having a "jolly holiday" a white lace dress with a red ribbon belt is the perfect ensemble!

Bedknobs and Broomsticks

Bedknobs and Broomsticks is set during World War II. The children's parents have been killed in the London blitz and are sent to live with their aunt in the country. This would explain their somewhat drab wardrobe and the utter lack of color. At the same time, these neutral hues can be used to inspire a contemporary wardrobe with timeless pieces. A gray blazer and pencil skirt are a classic look for the professional woman, while a fitted, brown dress can be dressed up with a floral scarf. The children are dressed for the cool, England weather in cardigans and over-sized sweaters. Newsboy caps and fedoras were all the rage in the '40s, but have now been updated and are seen in store windows everywhere. Where a ring with a "bedknob" on it to put a little magic into your outfit, and don't forget your over-sized bag: you'll be needing it for your many adventures!

The Great Mouse Detective

The Great Mouse Detective was released around the time that Disney was making it's comeback, and is a somewhat lesser known film; however, in my opinion, it is still a Disney classic. Out of it spawned a Disney golden age. It stars Basil of Baker Street, essentially a kid-friendly Sherlock Holmes. To emulate the fashion of the film, look first to Burberry. Trench coats, berets, and plaid are worn by the sleuthing mice. A fitted coat with a plaid scarf fits the bill. Little Olivia wears a plaid skirt, much like a kilt, Mary Jane's and a blazer over a white oxford with a bow tie. This classic child's uniform can be updated into women's wear with a fitting plaid skirt and some Mary Jane pumps. Looking for a true Sherlock inspired look? Don't forget the deerstalker hat and leather bound copy of the classic novel!

Peter Pan

Sure, the Peter Pan collar has absolutely nothing to do with the film (it has everything to do with the 1905 stage production) but it does share the same namesake nonetheless. So if you're looking to dress the part of the boy who never grew up, start with a Peter Pan collar and some green pants. Or simply wear a green dress. The key is to take inspiration from nature, specifically Neverland. Use neutral colors to balance out the vivid green. Feather accents are a homage to Peter's hat, or just wear a floppy fedora with a feather.

If you're in love with Wendy, start with a pale blue dress with an empire waist. Wendy's "dress" was actually her nightgown, so a pair of ballet flats are comparable to her bedroom slippers. A small bow barrette or bow headband completes the Wendy look. She would of course want to remember Peter so don't forget to carry a piece of him with you: perhaps a Tinker Bell necklace, a thimble, or a feather ring. Now just "think of a wonderful thought, any happy little thought" and you'll be ready to fly!
